Jesse was on staff at the defunct publications Brill's Content and Inside.com, and he freelanced for such other defunct publications as The Industry Standard, Gear, and Shout. He has also worked for some still funct media organizations, including Newsweek, ABC News, and Book magazine. A native of the New Jersey suburbs, Jesse first rose to media prominence as an undergraduate at Stanford University, where, in addition to earning a degree in American studies, he was briefly nationally famous as a disgraced newspaper columnist. He's pretty sure he has read more than 90 percent of all non-fiction published in The New Yorker since 1992.
