What is 'Australia' the movie?

Australia is an epic and romantic action adventure, set on the explosive brink of World War II. In it, an English aristocrat, Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman) travels to the faraway continent where she meets a rough-hewn local (Hugh Jackman) and reluctantly agrees to join forces with him to save the land she inherited. Together, they embark upon a transforming journey across hundreds of miles of the world’s most beautiful yet unforgiving terrain, only to face the bombing of the city of Darwin.

With his new film, Luhrmann is painting on a vast canvas, creating a cinematic experience that brings together romance, drama, adventure and spectacle.

In addition to Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, Australia stars a wealth of Australian talent including David Wenham, Jack Thompson, Bryan Brown and David Gulpilil. It also introduces to the screen, Brandon Walters as Nullah, the boy who steals Lady Ashley’s heart.

Australia has been passionately created by Oscar nominated Baz Luhrmann, one of the world’s leading directors with production and costumes designed by two time Oscar winner, Catherine Martin. These talented Australians have collaborated previously through their production company, Bazmark Inq to create such masterpieces as Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliette and Strictly Ballroom.

Outback

From red deserts to lush green waterholes, open spaces and sky that goes on forever; in Australia’s outback a new adventure awaits at every turn. It’s vast. It’s red. It’s welcoming. It’s magical. Lose yourself in the heart of this country, its people and its stories. That’s the thing with the Aussie outback – when you’re here, it becomes your story; your time and place.

The Outback is our ultimate mystery. It’s a massive place where the immense distances and raw nature stretch across endless tracts of an ancient land. Yet the outback remains a natural wonder, rich with water and teeming with life if you know where – and when – to look.

Romance

Australia is the perfect backdrop for a love story. Its eternal landscapes open your soul, its moods speak of mystery and promise. Its infinite sky watches over you like a lovers’ gaze. Australia stirs the emotions; adventures of the heart await at every turn.

The romance of Australia cannot be ignored. Imagine riding a camel through the sand dunes at sunset, or floating in a hot air balloon above the awakening desert at sunrise. There’s solitude if you want, or the sublimely romantic experience of star-gazing under a velvety night sky. The country, its people and its stories feel right.

Aboriginal

Australia’s Indigenous people belong to an ancient living culture. Their history spans over 50,000 years, and their stories give us a unique way to understand the birth of our land, its cragginess, spirituality and wonder.

Aboriginal knowledge is spiritual. It connects people with their land through art, dance, music, secret stories and ritual journeys into the mysteries known as the Dreamtime, when ancestral spirits came to Earth and created all things. In those wondrous outback landscapes you will see visual reminders of the Dreamtime spirits’ journeys everywhere.

Adventure

Australia is made for adventure. Its horizons are limitless. Whether you’re in the outback or the Australian Alps, it’s easy to sense how being part of this boundless wilderness is an adventure in itself.

Much of Australia remains wild and sparsely populated. See it on horseback, or test yourself against some of most rugged 4WD tracks imaginable. Camp under the stars, climb aboard a desert camel train, or canoe down one of the continent’s mighty rivers. Adventure lies in giving yourself over to this unique and ancient environment.

Journeys

There are thousands of journeys to follow here. From the very beginning, Aboriginal people recognised the only way to know their country was to walk through it letting nature and spirits shape their journey. The routes they followed were their songlines.

Today’s songlines are called into being by travellers who take the time to discover the diversity and wonder of Australia and its people. Wander the countryside, explore the red desert, swim in a waterhole, spend time among the vineyards, plunge into the surf. You will want your journey to never end.
